Pixies: EP2 ALBUM REVIEW
If you're a fan of alternative rock, chances are you've at least heard of the Pixies. Back in the late 80s, this band shaped a sound that would go on to influence some pretty huge names in 90s rock music and beyond. So forgive me for being blunt, but this new EP and the one they released last year have been two of the most disheartening listening experiences I've encountered; not because they are the worst music I've ever heard, but because they come from a band who can do so much better than this.
Take the opener from this new EP; that track sounds like an AC/DC song minus the sexually charged lyrics, or fun. While I did enjoy the opening to "Magdalena", and the melody on "Greens and Blues", I literally cannot think of anything else positive to say about this EP.
But my biggest complaint and the reason I consider these last two EPs to be such egregious offenders of the Pixies catalogue is the production. A lot of people hate on Bossanova or Trompe le Monde for being overly produced, but this EP has the same kind of squeaky clean production that I'd expect from modern radio rock, and it just doesn't fit this band, at all.
Anyway, I'll conclude this review with a recommendation and a word of warning; please listen to this band's back catalogue and stay as far away from EP1 and EP2 as possible.
